CHALLENGE

Beyond 5G Localization based on Channel Charting

Future wireless communication systems are expected to provide sensing capability to support applications such as autonomous driving, automated factory, smart city etc. As a prerequisite for sensing, achieving accurate positioning based on wireless signals is a very important and challenging research topic.

Channel Charting is a technique that builds a feature map of the transmission environment using wireless channel statistics.

Wireless localisation can be achieved by mapping a user’s channel to a specific position within this channel chart. A key limitation is that the channel chart does not pinpoint an exact location in the physical world, and anchor points need to be used to enable precise wireless positioning. This challenge encourages the development of accurate wireless positioning algorithms based on channel charting with limited anchor points.
